Why spine width matters

The spine is the strip of cover that faces outward on a bookshelf. On a KDP paperback, its width is set entirely by how thick the interior is. Get it wrong and your title will wrap onto the front or back cover, or a coloured band meant for the spine will creep onto the front. Spine width is also part of the full cover width, so it affects your whole cover file. Our guide on how to calculate KDP cover dimensions shows how it fits into the complete formula.

The spine width formula

Spine width (inches) = page count x thickness per page

Page count here means the total number of pages in your interior PDF, including front matter, back matter and blank pages. Print books always have an even page count, so if your file has an odd number, KDP adds a blank page at the end.

Paperback paper thickness and page limits used by our calculators, last checked October 2026.
Paper typeThickness per pagePage range
Black ink, white paper0.002252"24 to 828
Black ink, cream paper0.0025"24 to 776
Standard color, white paper0.002252"72 to 600
Premium color, white paper0.002347"24 to 828

To convert the result to millimetres, multiply by 25.4. To convert it to pixels for a 300 DPI cover, multiply by 300.

Worked examples

Here are some common page counts worked through the formula. These match what our spine width calculator returns.

Pages and paperCalculationSpine widthSpine text?
78, white78 x 0.0022520.1757" (4.46 mm)No
100, white100 x 0.0022520.2252" (5.72 mm)Yes
200, cream200 x 0.00250.5" (12.7 mm)Yes
300, white300 x 0.0022520.6756" (17.16 mm)Yes
300, cream300 x 0.00250.75" (19.05 mm)Yes
300, premium color300 x 0.0023470.7041" (17.88 mm)Yes
500, cream500 x 0.00251.25" (31.75 mm)Yes

Notice how much paper choice matters. The same 300-page book is 0.6756" thick on white paper but 0.75" on cream, a difference of nearly 2 mm. If you switch paper after the cover is designed, the cover must be resized.

The 79-page spine text rule

KDP only allows text on the spine when the book has at least 79 pages. Below that, the spine is too narrow to print text reliably, so it must be left free of words. You can still extend background colour or artwork across a thin spine.

Even at 79 pages, the spine is only about 0.18" to 0.2" wide, which leaves very little room for lettering. Many authors find that spine text starts to look comfortable somewhere above 100 pages, but that is a design judgment rather than a KDP rule.

Clearance and fold variance

Printing and binding involve small physical tolerances. KDP notes that the fold between spine and cover can vary by up to 0.0625" (about 1.6 mm) in either direction. To keep spine text from wrapping onto the cover, leave at least 0.0625" of clearance on each side of the spine.

Safe spine text width = spine width - (2 x 0.0625)
  • A 100-page white paper book has a 0.2252" spine, so the safe text area is only 0.1002" wide.
  • A 300-page white paper book has a 0.6756" spine, so the safe text area is 0.5506" wide.
  • A 500-page cream paper book has a 1.25" spine, so the safe text area is 1.125" wide.

Getting an accurate page count

Your spine is only as accurate as your page count. If you are still writing, estimate pages from your word count with the KDP Page Count Calculator, then recalculate once your interior PDF is final. Changing trim size, font size or margins will change the page count, and therefore the spine.

  1. Finalise your interior layout and export the print PDF.
  2. Note the exact page count, rounding up to the next even number if needed.
  3. Confirm your paper type in KDP.
  4. Calculate the spine and full cover size, then build the cover.
  5. Upload both files and check KDP's previewer for warnings.

Frequently Asked Questions

How wide is the spine of a 300-page KDP paperback?

On white paper it is 0.6756" (17.16 mm). On cream paper it is 0.75" (19.05 mm). On premium color paper it is 0.7041" (17.88 mm).

How many pages do I need for spine text on KDP?

At least 79 pages. Books with fewer pages cannot have text on the spine.

Does trim size affect spine width?

Not directly. Spine width depends on page count and paper type. However, a different trim size usually changes how many pages your manuscript needs, which then changes the spine.

Why is cream paper thicker than white?

Cream paper stock is slightly bulkier per sheet. KDP's figures put it at 0.0025" per page compared with 0.002252" for white, so cream books have wider spines.
