About the Keyword Character Counter
Each of your seven KDP keyword boxes has a character limit, and it is easy to go over without noticing when you are editing phrases directly. KDP may cut off or refuse a field that is too long, and an overfilled box often means a phrase you care about is the one that gets lost.
This counter mirrors the KDP keyword section: seven inputs, one per field. As you type, each field shows how many characters you have used, how many remain and a plain text status: Empty, Within limit, Almost full, Full or Over by a specific number. A small bar shows the same information visually, but you never need to rely on its colour.
The totals panel shows how many characters you have used across all fields and how many fields are filled, and warns you if any field is over. When everything is within limits, Copy all fields copies the filled fields one per line. If you are starting from a long list rather than finished fields, the KDP Keyword Formatter will pack it for you.
How It Works
Each field's count is the number of characters in the box, including spaces and punctuation, exactly as typed.
Remaining characters are the per-field limit minus the count. A field with five or fewer characters left is marked Almost full, and a field past the limit shows how many characters to remove.
Totals add up all seven fields. Available capacity is the number of fields multiplied by the per-field limit.
Formula
- Remaining
- Remaining = Limit per field − Characters in field
- Capacity
- Total capacity = Number of fields × Limit per field
Example
Three filled fields for a cozy mystery
- Field 1: "cozy mystery books with cats amateur sleuth series" is 50 characters, 0 left, status Full.
- Field 2: "small town mystery female detective" is 35 characters, 15 left.
- Field 3: "culinary cozy mystery with recipes for women" is 44 characters, 6 left.
- Total: 129 characters used, 3 of 7 fields filled, none over the limit.
All three fields are within the limit, and four fields are still free for more phrases.
Important Notes
- Spaces count as characters, so leading or trailing spaces you paste will be counted.
- Characters are counted as your browser stores them; most letters, accented letters included, count as one, and some emoji count as two.
- The limit and field count come from the site's central KDP settings. Confirm them in KDP if the keyword page changes.
- Your keywords are not saved or uploaded. Clearing or leaving the page removes them.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does KDP count spaces in keyword fields?
Yes. Every character in the box counts, including spaces between words. That is why this counter includes them.
What happens if a field is over the limit?
KDP will not accept more characters than the limit, so extra text may be cut off or the box may not let you continue typing. Fix it here first so you decide what to remove.
Is it bad to leave a keyword field empty?
It is not an error, but it is a missed opportunity. Use all seven fields for distinct, relevant phrases readers might search for.
Should I fill every field to the full limit?
Not at any cost. Relevance matters more than length. A shorter field with accurate phrases is better than a full one padded with loosely related words.
Can I paste a long list here?
This tool is for checking finished fields. For a long list, use the [KDP Keyword Formatter](/tools/kdp-keyword-formatter), which cleans, dedupes and packs it into fields automatically.
