About the Keyword List Cleaner

Keyword lists copied from spreadsheets, research tools, notes or ad reports arrive messy. You get double spaces, stray quotes and exclamation marks, numbers from rankings, blank lines and the same phrase in three spellings. Cleaning that by hand is slow, and a dirty list makes every later step harder.

Paste the list and choose what to fix. You can convert everything to lowercase, remove punctuation while keeping apostrophes and hyphens inside words, remove numbers, and remove duplicates either exactly or loosely (ignoring case and punctuation). Phrases are split on new lines, commas, semicolons, tabs and pipes, so a comma separated export works as well as a line by line list.

The stats show how many entries went in, how many empty entries were removed (including phrases that became empty after cleaning, such as a line that only held a number), how many duplicates were dropped and how many phrases came out. Copy or download the result, then pack it into fields with the KDP Keyword Formatter or check it for repeats in more detail with the Keyword Deduplicator.

How It Works

Text is split into entries and extra whitespace inside each entry is collapsed.

The options are applied in order: remove punctuation, remove numbers, then lowercase. Entries left empty are dropped.

If duplicate removal is on, the first occurrence of each phrase is kept. Loose matching compares phrases with case, punctuation and apostrophes ignored.

Example

A messy dog training list with every option on

  1. Input lines: Dog Training Book, (blank), dog training book, 101 Dog Tricks!, "puppy training, crate training", (spaces only), DOG TRAINING BOOK.
  2. The comma splits one line into two phrases, giving 6 entries that are not blank.
  3. "101 Dog Tricks!" becomes "dog tricks", and the two repeat versions of "dog training book" are removed.
  4. Output: dog training book, dog tricks, puppy training, crate training.

6 entries in, 1 empty entry removed, 2 duplicates removed, 4 clean phrases out.

Important Notes

  • Removing numbers also removes meaningful ones, such as the 50 in "over 50". Turn the option off when numbers matter.
  • Commas split phrases, so a phrase that genuinely contains a comma will become two entries.
  • Hyphens and apostrophes inside words are kept: self-help stays self-help.
  • All processing happens in your browser; nothing is uploaded or stored.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the empty entries count higher than the blank lines I see?

It also counts entries that became empty after cleaning, such as a line that only contained a number or punctuation, plus lines that held only spaces.

Will this change the meaning of my phrases?

Only if you choose options that remove meaningful characters. Removing numbers turns "21 day fix" into "day fix", so review the output or switch that option off.

What is the difference between this and the Keyword Deduplicator?

The cleaner fixes formatting and removes duplicates in one pass. The [Keyword Deduplicator](/tools/keyword-deduplicator) focuses only on duplicates and shows a table of which phrase each removed item matched.

Can I paste a CSV export?

Yes. Commas, tabs and semicolons all split entries, so most exports work. Remove header rows and any columns that are not keywords, such as search volume figures, or turn on Remove numbers.

Does lowercase hurt my Amazon keywords?

No. Amazon search is not case sensitive, so lowercase keywords work the same and are easier to compare and dedupe.
