About the Currency Percentage Calculator
Royalty statements arrive in many currencies, and many everyday publishing sums are simple percentages of a payment: a co-author or illustrator share, a narrator royalty split, an agent's commission, VAT on a service you bought, or a withholding amount. This calculator does those sums and formats the answer correctly for the currency, including currencies such as the Japanese yen that do not use decimal places.
Use % of amount to find a share, Add % to add something like VAT to a net price, and Subtract % to take a fee or commission off a payment. In share mode the tool also shows the remaining amount, so you can see both sides of a split.
This tool does not convert between currencies. For plain numbers without a currency, the Percentage Calculator also handles percentage change. For promotions, use the Discount Calculator.
How It Works
The portion is the amount multiplied by the percentage divided by 100.
Share mode shows the portion. Add mode adds the portion to the amount, and subtract mode takes it away.
Results are rounded to the cent, or to the whole unit for currencies without minor units, and formatted using the currency's usual style.
Formula
- Portion
- Portion = Amount × Percentage ÷ 100
- Add
- Total = Amount + Portion
- Subtract
- Total = Amount − Portion
Example
An illustrator's 15% share of a UK royalty payment
- Amount: £1,250.00. Currency: GBP.
- Calculation: % of amount. Percentage: 15%.
- Portion: £1,250.00 × 15 ÷ 100 = £187.50.
- Remaining: £1,250.00 − £187.50 = £1,062.50.
The illustrator's share is £187.50, leaving £1,062.50.
Important Notes
- No exchange rates are used. Enter the amount in the currency you want the answer in.
- Percentages from 0 to 1000 are accepted. Subtracting more than 100% gives a negative result and is flagged.
- Rounding is applied to the final figures only, so splits of many small amounts can differ by a cent from a spreadsheet that rounds each line.
- Tax rates vary by country and change over time. Check the current rate before adding or removing tax.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I remove VAT that is already included in a price?
Subtracting the VAT rate from a gross price does not give the net price. Divide the gross price by 1 plus the rate instead: £12.00 including 20% VAT is £12.00 ÷ 1.20 = £10.00 net. Use **X% of Y** in the [Percentage Calculator](/tools/percentage-calculator) to check the VAT portion.
Does this convert dollars to pounds or euros?
No. It applies a percentage within one currency. Amazon pays each marketplace in its own currency or converts it for you, depending on your payment settings.
Why are yen results shown without decimals?
The Japanese yen has no minor unit in everyday use, so amounts are rounded to whole yen to match how Amazon.co.jp reports them.
Can I split a royalty between several people?
Yes. Run the share mode once per person with their percentage, then check the shares add up to the full amount.
Is the commission taken from gross or net royalties?
That depends on your contract. Enter whichever amount your agreement uses as the base, and the tool applies the percentage to it.
