About the Paragraph Counter
On a phone or Kindle screen, a 200-word paragraph can fill the whole display with a single wall of text. Readers skim or give up. This tool counts your paragraphs, shows the average and longest length in words, and lists every paragraph over your limit so you can find natural places to break them.
The default limit of 150 words suits book chapters. For an Amazon book description, a newsletter or a blog post, try a lower limit such as 60 to 80 words, because those are read quickly and often on small screens. Each flagged paragraph is shown with its position and opening words so you can find it again in your manuscript.
Combine it with the Sentence Counter for sentence-level readability, and use the Book Description Formatter once your description paragraphs are the right length.
How It Works
Each line break starts a new paragraph, and blank lines between paragraphs are ignored. This matches how text pasted from Word, Google Docs and most editors is structured.
Words are counted in each paragraph. The average is the total words divided by the number of paragraphs.
Paragraphs with more words than your limit are listed with their position, word count and opening text.
Formula
- Average paragraph length
- Average = Total words ÷ Number of paragraphs
Example
Checking the built-in sample passage with a 40-word limit
- Press Try sample text and set the limit to 40 words.
- Paragraphs: 4. Total words: 131. Average: 32.8 words per paragraph.
- Longest paragraph: paragraph 2, at 58 words.
- Paragraphs over 40 words: paragraph 2 only.
Only paragraph 2 runs over the limit, so that is the one to split for easier reading.
Important Notes
- Text with hard line breaks inside paragraphs, such as some PDF copies or emails, is counted as one paragraph per line. Remove those breaks first for accurate results.
- Headings and scene-break markers on their own line count as short paragraphs if they contain words or numbers.
- Lines containing only symbols, such as *** scene breaks, are not counted.
- Your text is processed in your browser and never uploaded.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long should a paragraph be in a novel?
There is no fixed rule, but most commercial fiction keeps paragraphs well under 150 words, with frequent short paragraphs for dialogue and action. Long paragraphs suit slower, reflective passages.
Why does my whole chapter show as many tiny paragraphs?
The text probably has a line break at the end of every line, which is common when copying from a PDF. Paste from the original document instead.
What limit should I use for an Amazon book description?
Try 60 to 80 words. Descriptions are often read on phones, and short paragraphs with white space between them are easier to scan.
Do blank lines count as paragraphs?
No. Empty lines and lines without any letters or numbers are ignored.
Can I check a whole manuscript at once?
Yes. Paste the full text and the list shows every long paragraph with its number, which you can use to find it in your editor.
