How Many Pages Should a Book Have? Word Counts and KDP Page Counts
Common word count ranges by genre, words per page by trim size and font, KDP's 24 to 828 page limits, and how page count affects print cost and spine width.

Word count matters more than page count
Readers and publishers usually talk about book length in words, because page count depends on layout. The same 80,000-word novel can be 288 pages in one format and 410 in another. So the useful question is how many words your book needs, and then how many pages those words become at your chosen trim size and font.
There is no correct length. A book should be as long as it needs to be to deliver what it promises. That said, readers in each genre have expectations, and a book far outside the usual range may feel thin or overlong to them.
Common word count ranges by genre
The ranges below are commonly cited in publishing. They are guides to typical books in each category, not requirements. Many successful books fall outside them.
| Category | Common range (words) |
|---|---|
| Adult literary or general fiction | 70,000 to 100,000 |
| Mystery and thriller | 70,000 to 90,000 |
| Romance | 50,000 to 90,000 |
| Fantasy and science fiction | 90,000 to 120,000 or more |
| Young adult | 50,000 to 80,000 |
| Middle grade | 25,000 to 50,000 |
| Novella | 20,000 to 40,000 |
| Self-help and how-to nonfiction | 30,000 to 70,000 |
| Memoir | 60,000 to 90,000 |
The best benchmark is the books your readers already buy. Look at 10 or so similar titles and note their page counts and trim sizes. The Word Count Calculator can measure your manuscript.
How many words fit on a page
Words per page depend on trim size, margins, font, font size, and line spacing. This site's page count model uses a baseline of about 300 words per page for a 6 x 9 page at 11 pt with 1.15 line spacing, then scales by text area, font size, and spacing. It is a typesetting rule of thumb, so your final layout may differ.
| Trim size | Font and spacing | Approx. words per page |
|---|---|---|
| 6 x 9 | 11 pt, 1.15 | 300 |
| 6 x 9 | 12 pt, 1.15 | 252 |
| 6 x 9 | 10 pt, 1.15 | 363 |
| 6 x 9 | 11 pt, single | 336 |
| 6 x 9 | 11 pt, 1.5 | 231 |
| 5.5 x 8.5 | 11 pt, 1.15 | 251 |
| 5.25 x 8 | 11 pt, 1.15 | 219 |
| 5 x 8 | 11 pt, 1.15 | 205 |
Pages ≈ (Words ÷ Words per page) + (Chapters × 0.5) + Front and back matter, rounded up to an even number
The half page per chapter allows for chapter openings, which usually start partway down a page and leave space at the end of the previous chapter. Print books always have an even number of pages.

Take an 80,000-word novel with 20 chapters and 10 pages of front and back matter, set in 11 pt with 1.15 spacing, black ink on white paper, sold on Amazon.com.
| Measure | 6 x 9 | 5 x 8 |
|---|---|---|
| Words per page | about 300 | about 205 |
| Body pages | 277 | 400 |
| Print page count | 288 | 410 |
| Printing cost | $4.46 | $5.92 |
| Spine width (white paper) | about 0.649 in | about 0.923 in |
The smaller trim adds 122 pages, $1.46 of printing cost per copy, and a noticeably thicker spine. Neither choice is wrong. A 5 x 8 format can suit fiction well, while 6 x 9 keeps costs and price lower for long books. See KDP Trim Sizes Explained for more on choosing a trim.
KDP page limits
KDP sets minimum and maximum page counts for paperbacks. As configured on this site in October 2026:
- Minimum: 24 pages for paperbacks. Shorter books cannot be printed.
- Maximum: 828 pages for black ink on white paper, 776 pages on cream paper, and 600 pages for standard color.
- Spine text is only allowed on books with at least 79 pages.
- Hardcovers have their own limits, configured here as 75 to 550 pages.
Limits vary by ink, paper, and trim size, and Amazon updates them from time to time. Confirm the current range in KDP for your exact format. If your book runs over the maximum, consider a larger trim, a slightly smaller font, or splitting it into two volumes.
How page count affects cost, price, and spine
On Amazon.com, black ink paperbacks with 24 to 108 pages at a regular trim pay a flat printing cost of $2.30. From 110 pages, the cost is $1.00 plus $0.012 per page. Every 100 extra pages therefore adds about $1.20 per copy, which raises the minimum list price and lowers your royalty at any given price.
- Price floor: a 288-page 6 x 9 book costs $4.46 to print, while a 410-page book at the same trim would cost $5.92.
- Spine width: grows with every page, about 0.002252 inches per page on white paper. Use the KDP Spine Width Calculator or read How to Calculate Paperback Spine Width.
- Cover size: a wider spine changes the full cover dimensions. See How to Calculate KDP Cover Dimensions.
- Inside margins: thicker books need wider gutter margins, which slightly reduces words per page.
Front and back matter
Front and back matter are the pages around the main text. They count toward your page total and printing cost, so include them in your estimate. A typical novel uses 6 to 12 such pages; nonfiction with an index or references can use far more.
- Front matter: title page, copyright page, dedication, table of contents, foreword or introduction.
- Back matter: acknowledgments, about the author, other books by the author, notes, references, index, and a request for reviews.
- Blank pages: many layouts start chapters or sections on right-hand pages, which can add blank left-hand pages.
Estimate first with the KDP Page Count Calculator, then use the page count from your final interior file, since that is the number KDP uses for printing cost and spine width.
