About the Subtitle Generator

For non-fiction, the subtitle does most of the selling. It tells shoppers who the book is for and what they will be able to do after reading. For fiction, a subtitle is usually short and descriptive, such as "A Cozy Mystery Novel" or the series name and number.

This generator builds subtitles from your topic, audience and desired outcome, using shapes that work well on product pages: practical guides, step counts, "without" promises and audience-specific framing. Each idea shows its own character count. Add your title and every idea also shows the combined "Title: Subtitle" length with a pass or over-limit label, so you never draft something that will not fit.

Write the outcome as an action the reader takes, for example "start every day calm and focused". Then pick the subtitle that is most specific and most true to your content. If you still need a title, start with the Book Title Generator.

How It Works

Non-fiction patterns combine your outcome, topic and audience, for example "A Practical Guide to [Outcome]" or "Everything [Audience] Need to Know About [Topic]". Fiction patterns describe the genre, story type or series.

When a title is entered, the tool joins it to each subtitle with a colon and a space and compares the result with the title limit from our KDP configuration.

Generate more steps to a new seed for a fresh set. If AI suggestions are enabled on this site they are tried first, with the built-in generator as a fallback, and the source is labeled.

Formula

Combined length
Length = characters(Title) + 2 + characters(Subtitle)

Example

Title "Morning Routines Made Simple", Self-Help, topic "morning routines", audience "busy parents", outcome "start every day calm and focused"

  1. Idea: "The Step-by-Step Guide to Morning Routines for Busy Parents" (59 characters).
  2. Combined: 28 + 2 + 59 = 89 characters, well within the limit.
  3. The longest idea in the set, "Morning Routines Strategies to Start Every Day Calm and Focused, in Less Time Than You Think", gives 122 combined characters.

All ten ideas fit. The shorter, audience-specific subtitle is clearer and reads better on a product page.

Important Notes

  • The length check uses the title limit stored in our KDP configuration. Confirm the current limit on your KDP setup page.
  • Fitting the limit is not the goal. Most effective subtitles are far shorter than the maximum.
  • Subtitles must match the book and its cover. Do not add review quotes, prices, "bestseller" claims or unrelated keywords.
  • Keyword tags in parentheses are suggestions to adapt, not something to paste in unchanged.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the subtitle need to appear on my cover?

If you enter a subtitle in KDP, it should match the subtitle on your cover. Small differences can trigger a metadata review, so decide on the wording before the cover is finished.

Why does the outcome field matter so much?

Readers buy non-fiction to get a result. A subtitle that names the result ("Sleep Through the Night Again") usually does more work than one that only names the topic.

Should fiction books have a subtitle?

Many do not. When used, fiction subtitles are short labels such as "A Small-Town Romance" or "Book 2 of the Ember Chronicles". Choose a fiction genre to get that style of idea.

Is the length check the same as KDP's?

It joins the title and subtitle with a colon and space, the way they are typically displayed, and compares the total with the configured limit. KDP's form is the final check.

Can I put keywords in my subtitle?

Use words that genuinely describe the book. A natural subtitle that includes a search phrase is fine; a list of keywords is not, and may be rejected.
