About the Book Outline Generator

An outline turns an idea into a book you can actually finish. This generator gives you a proven starting structure: a three-act story outline for fiction, or a teach-and-apply structure for non-fiction that moves from foundations through a step-by-step method to troubleshooting and next steps.

Choose your genre, enter a topic or premise, add your audience and pick a length. Every chapter comes with a purpose, three key points and a word target, and the totals show how the book adds up. Fiction targets are weighted toward the middle of the story, where most of the conflict happens; non-fiction targets give the method chapters the most room.

Copy the outline as plain text, download it as a Markdown file, or press Send to Chapter Planner to turn it into editable chapters you can rename, reorder and track. To see how your word target translates to pages, use the page count calculator or read how many pages a book should have.

How It Works

The length setting gives a total word target. Fiction and non-fiction have different totals for each length (for example, Standard is 75,000 words for fiction and 45,000 for non-fiction).

Each chapter receives a fixed share of that total and is rounded to the nearest 100 words, so the sum of chapter targets can differ from the length setting by a few hundred words.

Send to Chapter Planner saves the chapters in this browser. If the planner already has chapters, you choose whether to replace them or add the outline after them.

Formula

Chapter target
Target words = round(Total words × Chapter share ÷ 100) × 100

Example

Self-Help, topic "morning routines", audience "busy parents", Standard length

  1. Total for Standard non-fiction: 45,000 words, spread across 10 chapters in 5 sections.
  2. Chapter 1, "Introduction: Why Morning Routines Matters", gets 8% = 3,600 words.
  3. The four method chapters get 5,400, 5,400, 5,400 and 4,500 words.
  4. Chapter targets add up to 45,100 words because of rounding.

A 10-chapter outline totaling 45,100 target words, ready to edit in the Chapter Planner.

Important Notes

  • The outline is a template, not a finished plan. Rename chapters and rewrite key points so they reflect your actual content.
  • Chapter titles insert your topic as typed, so occasionally the grammar needs a quick fix (for example, "Matters" after a plural topic).
  • Word totals are typical ranges, not rules. Genre and reader expectations vary.
  • Outlines and planner data are stored only in this browser.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which structure does the fiction outline use?

A three-act structure with ten beats: opening image, inciting incident, debate, new world, rising pressure, midpoint turn, low point, gathering strength, climax and closing image. It works for most commercial genres.

Can I change the number of chapters?

Send the outline to the Chapter Planner, then add, remove, split or reorder chapters. The planner recalculates totals as you edit.

How long should my book be?

It depends on genre and reader expectations. Use the length options as a starting point, then compare with successful books in your category.

Does sending to the Chapter Planner delete my existing plan?

Only if you choose Replace. If the planner already has chapters, you are asked whether to replace them or add the outline after them.

What is in the Markdown download?

A .md file with section headings, each chapter's title, purpose, target words and key points. It opens in any text editor and pastes cleanly into most writing apps.
