About the Pen Name Generator

Many authors write under a pen name to keep genres separate, protect their privacy or choose a name that suits their books better. A pen name works best when it sounds natural for the genre: a romance name often feels different from a thriller name or a picture book name.

Pick your genre and the generator suggests a matching style (Romantic, Dark, Friendly, Classic or Modern), which you can change. Turn on initials for names like "E. C. Thorne", or add a surname hint such as a family name to see it paired with different first names. Each set gives twelve ideas, and Generate more shows another set.

These are starting points only. Generated names are not checked for uniqueness, trademarks or existing authors. Search Amazon, search engines and the trademark database for your country before you use a name, and never choose a name that could be mistaken for a real author.

How It Works

Each style has its own list of first names and surnames. The style, initials setting and surname hint form a seed, so the same choices give the same list.

With initials turned on, every other idea uses two initials before the surname. With a surname hint, about one in three ideas uses your surname.

When AI suggestions are enabled on this site they are tried first; otherwise, and on any failure, the built-in generator is used. The source is always labeled.

Example

Mystery genre (suggested style: Classic / literary)

  1. Without initials, ideas include "Eleanor Thorne", "Margaret Wells" and "Henry Sterling".
  2. With initials turned on, ideas include "C. M. Sterling", "E. C. Thorne" and "E. A. Wells".

Shortlist two or three names, then search each one on Amazon and in trademark databases before deciding.

Important Notes

  • Suggestions only: names are not checked for uniqueness, trademarks or existing authors.
  • Using a pen name on KDP is common, but your real name is still needed for your account, tax and payment details.
  • Do not use a name that imitates a well-known author or implies a connection that does not exist.
  • The surname hint accepts letters, spaces, hyphens and apostrophes, up to 30 characters.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I publish on KDP under a pen name?

Yes. You enter the pen name as the author or contributor during setup. Your KDP account, tax interview and payments stay in your legal name.

How do I check whether a pen name is already used?

Search the name in quotes on Amazon and a search engine, look it up in your country's trademark database, and check social media handles if you plan to use them.

Why does the style change when I pick a genre?

The tool suggests a style that suits common reader expectations for that genre. You can override it at any time with the Style menu.

Should I use initials?

Initials can make a name feel classic or gender-neutral, which some authors prefer in genres like fantasy, thrillers and literary fiction. They are a style choice, not a requirement.

Can I use different pen names for different genres?

Yes, and many authors do, so readers of one genre are not confused by another. Each pen name can have its own Author Central profile.
